GETTING A VIRGINIA DRIVER’S LICENSE OR STATE ID FOR INTERNATIONALS

of Motor Vehicles (DMV), 385 Arbor Drive, Christiansburg (381-7171)

Direction to DMV:  Take 460 to Christiansburg. Take left at red light onto Arbor Drive between Soft Cloth Car Wash and Hardee's. Follow Arbor Drive and the DMV office will be on the right beside the bowling alley.

IF YOU HAVE AN F-1 visa:

1) Knowledge of the Virginia drivers manual; copies are available at Cranwell. Not needed for getting a state ID.

2) Unexpired passport with F-1 visa and I-94 card.

3) SEVIS I-20 stamped or unstamped by INS/BCIS.

4) Social Security card * (SEE BELOW)

5) Proof of VA residency ** (SEE BELOW)

IF YOU HAVE AN F-2 visa:

1) Knowledge of the Virginia drivers manual; copies are available at Cranwell. This is not needed for state ID.

2) Unexpired passport with F-2 visa and I-94 card.

3) SEVIS I-20 stamped or unstamped by INS/BCIS..

4) Proof of VA residency ** (SEE BELOW)

IF YOU HAVE A J-1 visa:

1) Knowledge of the Virginia driver’s manual; copies are available at Cranwell.  This is not needed for state ID.

2) Unexpired passport with J-1 visa and I-94 card.

3) DS-2019 issued to the applicant.

4) Social Security card*.  (SEE BELOW)

5) Proof of VA residency ** (SEE BELOW)

IF YOU HAVE A J-2 visa:

1) Knowledge of Virginia driver’s manual; copies of the manual are available at Cranwell. Not needed for state ID.

2) Unexpired passport with J-2 visa and I-94 card.

3) DS-2019 issued to the applicant.

4) If you have an Employment Authorization Document (EAD), you will also need a Social Security card.

5) Proof of VA residency ** (SEE BELOW)

IF YOU HAVE AN H1B visa:

1) Knowledge of Virginia driver’s manual; copies of the manual are available at Cranwell. Not needed for state ID.

2) Unexpired passport with J-2 visa and I-94 card.

3) I-797 form issued to the applicant.

4) Social Security card*.  (SEE BELOW)

5) Proof of VA residency ** (SEE BELOW)

IF YOU HAVE OTHER VISA TYPES:

You may need a letter from Cranwell.  Please come see us with all your immigration documents and passport.

* If you do not have a Social Security card, you can apply on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 10 am to 12 noon at Cranwell. Be sure to bring your I-20 (or DS-2019), I-94 card, and your passport.

**Proof of VA Residency: One of the following: a bank statement, lease agreement or utility bill (gas, electric, sewer, water, cable or phone) with your name and your Virginia address. Cellular phone or pager bills are NOT accepted.  All documents must be ORIGINAL (not a copy), no older than 2 months and include your name and address as written on your application.
