This
semester we have talked about the "Hall of Faith," which is what some
people call the list of persons in Hebrews 11 who were commended for their faith.
These people trusted that God was faithful to His promises. They were sure of
what they hoped for and certain of what they did not see (Hebrews 11:1). Since
the time of the book of Hebrews, the "Hall of Faith" has continued to
grow, because there continues to be people of faith. I would like to add another
name to the Hall of Faith: Lauren McCain. Lauren touched the lives of
many people, including many international students. I know some of you were deeply
affected by her passing. I did not really know her, but I've gotten to know her
better by talking with her friends and reading about her. The more I've gotten
to know her, the more I share the pain of those who are grieving the loss of her
presence among us. These words of Lauren are found all over the media:
"The purpose and love of my life is Jesus Christ" (taken from her MySpace
page). Her pastor in Hampton said, "She just didn't talk about the Lord;
she lived Him." In Philippians 1:21, Paul wrote, "For me, to live is
Christ." That's what Lauren did. There is much to say about Lauren's life,
but she was also prepared for death. On April 18, there was a celebration of Lauren's
life in Hampton. According to one story, Lauren's mother said that if Lauren were
there, she would be saying, "Come on, guys. This is exciting! Let's praise
Him! Let's praise Him!" I believe Lauren would agree with Paul's words, "For
me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." Lauren was sure of what she hoped
for and certain of what she did not see. Lauren belongs in the Hall of Faith.
