LESSON ONE:

" TURNING TRIALS INTO TRIUMPS "
(James 1:2-12)

By Jay Lester

General Question
? How do you normally feel, and respond, when you have to face a trial (a test of difficulty, trouble, or suffering)? Are there any benefits in facing trials? If so, what are they?

How Should Christians Respond to Trials?

* Read James 1:2-8. James presents three imperatives in verses 2 through 5:

1:2: "Consider" - regard or think about it this way
1:4: "Let have" - respond in this way (The NIV does not translate the imperative)
1:5: "Ask" - ask God

1. Whenever we face trials of many kinds, we are to consider it pure ________ (1:2). Why?

2. The testing of our faith develops "perseverance" (1:3), but perseverance is not the final goal. We are to let perseverance have its perfect work (1:4). We must allow perseverance to finish its work. What is this "work?"

3. Verse 5 says, "If any of you lacks wisdom, [you] should _________ _________." Why?

"For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding." (Proverbs 2:6)

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding" (Proverbs 9:10, cf. 1:7).

4. When we "ask God," we must have a particular attitude (1:6). How would you describe this attitude? How does it contrast with the attitude of the person "who doubts?" (1:6-8)

Proper Perspectives for "the Poor" & "the Rich"

5. Read James 1:9-11. In what way does the Christian in "humble circumstances" have a "high position?" (1:9)

6. What should the rich person not take pride in? Why? (1:10-11) In what way does the "one who is rich" have a "low position?" (1:10)

God's Promise

7. Read James 1:12. What does God promise for the person "who perseveres under trial?" To whom does this promise apply?

Reflection & Application

Are you presently experiencing difficulties, trouble, or suffering? If you aren't now, you certainly will in the future. How will you handle it? What are you trusting in? Will you need help? The Bible says, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1). Have you entered into a relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ?

As a Christian, how do you respond to the trials in your life? Periodically review and reflect on James 1:2-8, and "consider," "let have," and "ask." Remember the promise in verse 12.

Where do you go for "wisdom?" Remember that God is the source of wisdom. Continually ask God for wisdom, with an attitude of trust and commitment, and apply God's wisdom to your daily life.
